A fitted sheet wraps around the mattress with elasticated edges or corners. A flat sheet is a rectangular piece of fabric without fitted corners, commonly used between you and a duvet or blanket. They are different shapes with different jobs—not two names for the same bedding item. [1]

A flat sheet has no elasticated pocket. You can leave it loose, fold the top edge over a blanket, or tuck the sides and foot underneath the mattress. When it sits above your body, it is also called a top sheet.
That flexibility is its main appeal. On a warm night, it can be your only covering if that feels comfortable. In a cooler air-conditioned room, it can sit beneath a duvet. You can also use a sufficiently large flat sheet as the bottom sheet instead of a fitted sheet.
In Hong Kong, “床單” is sometimes used broadly for bed linen. In this guide, flat sheet specifically means a non-elasticated flat sheet, while “床笠” means the shaped sheet that wraps around a mattress. Check the product photograph and specifications when a listing uses a broad name.
A fitted sheet is shaped to sit over the mattress, with its elastic helping keep the corners in place. It normally goes over a mattress protector when you use one, giving you a fabric surface to sleep on without tucking a flat sheet around every edge.
A fitted sheet is not the same as a waterproof mattress protector. A standard cotton sheet provides a washable sleeping surface, but should not be relied on to stop liquid reaching the mattress. Select a separate protector for the protection you need.

Measure the height of everything the fitted sheet will wrap around, including a topper when it sits inside the same sheet. For example, a 30 cm mattress plus a 5 cm topper creates approximately 35 cm of height before allowing for the protector and the way the sheet grips underneath.

If the corners keep coming off, check orientation, length, width, depth and the condition of the elastic before buying accessories to hold the sheet down. A sheet that is too small cannot gain more fabric through tighter tucking.
Choose according to how you plan to use it. As a top sheet, it needs enough width to cover the people in bed and enough length for your preferred fold and tuck. As a bottom sheet, it must cover the mattress, extend down its sides and leave fabric to secure underneath.
A flat sheet’s finished dimensions are therefore not the same as the mattress dimensions. For a bed against the wall, think about whether you can reach the tucked side. For couples, try the amount of coverage you both need rather than choosing only by the size name.
